Elegance in Simplicity

Elegance in simplicity is a cherished commodity. The one who can sift through the immeasurable complexity of a situation or problem and produce a simple, understandable result demonstrates a great capacity for wisdom, influence, and power. Thus it is with God our Creator, who states simply and plainly the work of His hand.

In the Book of Genesis, God brings us the story of the Creation of the Heavens and the Earth. God tells us in the first sentence of the Bible that He created them (Genesis 1:1) in a simple, direct statement anyone can understand. The elegance herein is the amount of meaning behind the simple words.

First, He states “In the beginning God”. These may well be the four most important words in the entire Bible. They indicate God was there in the beginning, was there before the beginning, has always been there, and will always be there. He is eternal, the great uncaused First Cause, the first and the last. If you fail to recognize or admit God started it all, you will have trouble believing the entire rest of the Bible. Many fail in this endeavor; hence, the myriad skeptics.

Next, He tells us He created the Heavens and the Earth. Perhaps the greatest understatement ever, He speaks of incomprehensible power and insight. He created the Heavens and the Earth and everything in them. In elegant simplicity, this declaration reveals a Truth central to our faith. It declares that an infinitely complex Universe was created by God. The statement is bold, bright, plain and marvelously elegant in its simplicity. There is no mistaking its meaning, and the implications are staggeringly complex. Man has been studying His Creation for thousands of years and, as smart as we think we are, we still have not unlocked many of the fundamental mysteries of the Universe, which God told us without fanfare that He created.

God is the Master of the understatement. He does not use flowery or ostentatious language to describe His immense and incredible accomplishment. Despite the fact that His Creations are awesome, incredible, complex indescribable, immeasurable, beautiful, and more, He does not drive home the point the way a man would. A man would glorify the statement with picturesque adjectives and descriptions to make sure others knew how fabulous the Creation was.

God, however, has no need to emphasize the vastness of the Universe, the complexity of its design, or the perfect balance He imparted to the Universe the systems and laws under which it functions. The need for self-serving descriptions comes from man’s pride and lack of self-esteem. God is secure with who He is. He doesn’t need a spin doctor to guide our thinking, He just tells it the way it is. He is sure of His power and glory and simply lets us view His awesome work to derive the obvious conclusion. He is so secure in His majesty He states with elegant simplicity that He created in infinitely complex and infinitely beautiful world in which we live. God’s complete authority allows Him to be both bold and modest in telling us He created it all.

This same God who created the world also created this day we are about to enjoy. Each day is both elegant and simple and represents a gracious gift from Him. It is normal for God to be direct, simple, secure, gracious, and loving in His gifts to us. It would be a normal act of obedience for each of us to take time to praise Him for the elegant simplicity of His Creation. Take some time today to let God know that you appreciate the elegance in both His simplicity and His immensity of authority, power, and love.

In His love and service,
