“To promote Godly living in a culture committed to destroying it”
Tuesday, April 26, 2016
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “The Gospel of Jesus Christ”? Do you think of the New Testament? Perhaps you think of the books of the Bible written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You might even think about Jesus Christ Himself and His ministry. Because the Gospel of Jesus Christ has made an enormous impact on the world and its history for the last 2,000 years, it is important for Christians to be familiar with what the actual substance of the Gospel is.
I must begin by stating the obvious – the gospel is not “our” gospel, it is Jesus Christ’s Gospel. It is God’s Gospel, He is the author of the Gospel, not man. This means we have no right to change it or try to adapt it to be more palatable to our own modern culture or our own personal preferences. God did not grant us the prerogative to change one single iota of the Gospel or the Law (Matthew 5:18). The Gospel originated with God and He has all the copyrights. The Bible is very emphatic about alterations to the Gospel, saying, “If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!” (Galatians 1:9).
In terms of the Gospel’s substance, one of the first things it addresses is the nature of fallen man and his sin. Sometimes called the “doctrine of depravity of man”, it reveals the truth that all men are sinners by both nature and choice. It tells us that each of us inherited a Sin Nature from our forefather Adam. The gospel declares all men are sinners, that we are fallen creatures. The gospel declares man is not basically good (Matthew 19:17, Romans 3:10-18), but that all men are inherently sinful and in need of a Savior. “Therefore, just as sin entered the world though one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12).
The “news” of our sin is not welcomed by most people. After all, sin and death are not good news. The Good News is Jesus Christ’s substitutionary blood atonement for our sins, which saves us from the Second Death (Revelation 20:6). In Christ, the second Adam, God is redeeming for Himself an entirely new race, of which He all wants us to be a part. His blood atonement is an indispensable element of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Listen how often the Bible speaks of Christ shedding His blood for our salvation: “Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission (of sin).” (Hebrews 9:22). Romans 5:9 says we are “justified by His blood”. Ephesians 1:7 says, “We have ‘redemption through His blood’”. Ephesians 2:13 says, “We who were once far off, are now brought near by the blood of Christ.” Colossians 1:14 says, “We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:20 says Christ has “made peace through the blood of His Cross.”
Finally, the Gospel speaks to us of the salvation we receive as a free gift by grace, received exclusively through faith in Jesus Christ. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1-2). “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is very normal, and its substance is Good News to all those who approach a Holy God with a repentant heart. This is God’s plan for us. He doesn’t grant salvation through good deeds, through sacrifice, through donations, through reincarnation, or any other method. Only the blood of His precious Son Jesus can redeem us and pay the debt of our sin. Best of all, it is free. It is a gift, but you have to accept the gift and ask Jesus to come into your heart and be the LORD of your life. The substance of the Gospel has the power to save. Will you accept it and embrace it today?
In His love and service,
A servant of Jesus Christ
