Truth or Tabloid?
Tabloid newspapers are notorious for stretching or exaggerating the truth, often characterizing an innocent event in a dubious or risqué way. For example, if the mayor of a city is helping an elderly lady to cross the street and he trips on the ground, the headline may read “Mayor Falls for Older Woman”. If the mayor later cuts his finger and is attended with first aid, the headline may read “Alcohol Flows in Mayor’s Office”.
Technically, these headlines are accurate and reflect actual events. The problem is they have been crafted to mislead the reader by imputing evil intent when, in fact, the situation was innocent and blameless. Any real truth that may have existed has been perverted intentionally to mislead the reader, with inappropriate actions implied.
Satan long ago mastered the art of perverting the truth into believable lies. Shamefully, he will try to deceive and confuse anyone, even Jesus. Scripture records how, after Jesus fasted forty days in the desert, Satan tempted Him with perverted Scripture. Satan quoted Psalm 91:11-12 in an attempt to provoke Jesus into testing God (Luke 4:9-11). Jesus, being God the Son, instantly recognized the trick and replied with appropriate Scripture, exposing the root of the devil’s lie.
Mankind is not as adept as Jesus, and Satan has had success in perverting the Truth since man was created, and hence the Fall. Satan told Adam and Eve a lie to entice them to sin. “You will not surely die”, said Satan to Eve. The fruit was good for food and pleasing to the eye, but it caused the fall of man. Satan told them, “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil”. (Genesis 3:5). Satan told them a partial truth, but perverted the message. As the saying goes, “A partial truth is a whole lie”.
Satan will lie to you. Actually, it’s worse than that – he only lies to you. Jesus warns us in John 8:44 “When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father lies.” and that “there is no truth in him.” His technique reverses the tabloid approach – instead of making innocent situations look bad, Satan often makes bad situations look acceptable through his lies.
Satan will tell you your addiction is an illusion He may even characterize it as a necessity and tell you any shame is misplaced. He will tell you there’s nothing wrong with a little flirting or withholding information on your tax return or getting the insurance company to pay for damage caused prior to the accident. He will tell you that reading God’s Word daily is foolishness and a waste of valuable fun time. He will tell you that you are not really saved. He will tell you anything to sow seeds of doubt that might lead to sin, just as he did in the Garden with Adam and Eve.
The supermarket tabloids have a mission to make money by entertaining people and trying to sell newspapers. They distort the truth deliberately to lure you in, appealing to your dark and carnal side. Even though most people are fully aware the tabloids’ distortions of the truth, tabloid companies sell millions of papers per week. The companies don’t care if they destroy reputations or the lives of those they feature. Satan isn’t in it for the money, he’s after something infinitely more valuable – your soul.
Satan’s mission is to steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10). There is not one aspect of your life that he does not wish to harm and he will tell you anything in order to corrupt you. Ironically, he never does the damage, we do it to ourselves. It is after we start believing in the lie that we act out and leave God’s ways for sinful ways. As with Adam and Eve, he makes the sin appear seductively pleasant, claiming no consequences are attached. As soon as we take in the lie and believe it, we are headed for a fall.
Satan’s ways are not normal, they are sinful and tabloid-like versions of the Truth. He may provide us with highly accurate information, but he will never tell us God’s side of the story, the normal side, which is the Truth. He wants you to ruin your life and lose the peace you enjoy with God. Reject his lies and choose the Truth. It’s the only way to live a normal life.
In His love and service,
A servant of Jesus Christ
