God’s Plan for You
One of the questions people often ponder is whether God has a plan for their life. Let me assure you – He does. However, it is up to you to seek Him and to seek out the plan He has for your life. Many people fail to find God’s plan for their lives because they are seeking their own plan, not His. They think that by randomly chasing their dreams they will stumble upon the design God has for their lives. Others try the scatter shot approach, dabbling small amounts in a fixed pattern, like pellets from a 12 gauge. Neither of these methods will work; you must approach and search for God on His terms, not your own.
Our God is a God of order and planning. He is not a God of accidental happenings and experiments. He is The God who carefully planned the Heavens and the Earth before He created them. These creations didn’t just happen after a cosmic explosion that resulted in random patterns of perfectly constructed stars and planets. God planned the nature and design of the Heavens and the Earth and then He carried out His plan perfectly (Genesis 1:1).
God also designed and created each of us. He tells the prophet Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5, Psalm 139:13). God had a plan for Saul of Tarsus, who was educated as a Pharisee and who persecuted Christians unmercifully until God revealed His plan for Paul’s life on the road to Damascus. God had a plan for the invalid at the pool at Bethesda who waited thirty eight years just for Jesus to spend a few precious moments to heal him.
Most of us will not experience God calling us the way He called Saul on the Damascus Road or be set apart to be a great prophet like Jeremiah. The Bible, however, contains many stories of so-called “ordinary” people that God uses in extraordinary ways. These happenings are not accidents, they are part of His plan. Just because our lives seem ordinary does not mean God will fail to use us in extraordinary ways. As Creator, He has the right to use us any way He wishes. “Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay same pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?” (Romans 9:21)
You are not an accident. Your ancestors were not accidents. Where you live and work is not an accident. God has a plan for your life and He will open and shut doors in order to direct you in the path He wishes you to take. He may send you on a very common path or He may steer you on a path fraught with danger. Whether you follow His lead is your choice. He gave each of us free will so, as with Jonah, we can run in the opposite direction if we choose. Be forewarned, however – God may send a whale of a diversion to get you back on track for His plan.
The secret to discovering His plan is to seek Him and surrender your life to Him. If we fail to listen to Him or continue to rebel against Him, His plan for our life will never be fulfilled. If we run from Him, He can never give us the full measure of blessings He has in store for us both on Earth and in Heaven. Doing it our way never works out, but doing it God’s way always leads to fulfillment.
Jonah thought everything was normal when he found a ship to carry him away from God’s orders to go to Nineveh. You, too, may think everything is normal as you run from God’s plan for you. As with Jonah, the key to finding God’s plan is surrendering to His will. We may not understand all or even part of God’s plan, but we know He has blessed it, even if it seems ordinary. I pray today that each of you will surrender to Him and seek the plan He has for your life.
In His love and service,
A servant of Jesus Christ
