Burger King Christians

The Burger King Corporation has a famous motto of “Have it your way”. Through this slogan, they advertise their restaurants’ willingness to allow you to select which items you want to include or forego on your charbroiled hamburger – pickles, lettuce, ketchup, onions, and so on. The intent is to deliver you a sandwich that tastes just the way you like it. Some people take advantage of this offer to customize, whereas others take their burger just as it comes.

Years before the Burger King restaurant chain came into existence, C.S. Lewis said, “There are two kinds of people – those who say to God “Thy will be done’, and those to whom God says ‘All right, have it your way.’” As with hamburgers, some people choose to customize their Christianity and have it their way, others take it as God has prepared it.

It is one thing to tell the restaurant what you will and will not accept on your sandwich, it is a different thing to tell God what you will and won’t accept from Him during the time “sandwiched” between birth and death. God has provided us with a faith that must be accepted “as-is”, not customized to our whims, preferences, likes or dislikes. We are obligated to take the whole package He provides. We are not to withhold any of His commands or any part of ourselves when we commit ourselves to Him.

Still, we all manage to play Burger King Christianity in some way. We pick and choose which commands and rules we wish to obey. We discard or modify those that rub us the wrong way or which we deem as too difficult or restrictive. In typical human fashion, we tend to be vocal and demonstrative of those facets of the faith we have chosen and make sure everyone notices the strengths and our obedience. Meanwhile, we are careful to conceal those areas where we are rebelling and are equally diligent in hiding our disobedience. Then we rationalize about how good we are compared to others.

Despite our clever chicanery, God sees through the façade of our Burger King-like Christianity. He sees the choices we reject just as clearly as those we accept. As Mr. Lewis cautions us, however, it is a dangerous game to play. God may turn us over to our sin and our shameful lusts (Romans 1:24-32) and it is impossible to escape unless He decides to relent in His wrath. We are forewarned, “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

Christianity is not a cafeteria-style faith where we can reject one offering after another and select only the choice fruits that fit “our style”. We must take the easy with the difficult, for all things in God’s plan are good. We can’t withhold the sour pickle of forgiveness. We cannot reject the garnish of “Let us pray.” Many of us need more “catch up” in our Bible reading. Or maybe you’re rejecting the bitter onion of repentance. Whatever our choice, we have gone against God’s wishes (Romans 3:10-12).

God will let you have it your way, but if you wish to enjoy the full measure of His blessings, you must do things His way. You can have it your way and reject His Son Jesus Christ, the only way into Heaven and eternal life (John 14:6), but you will not like this way (talk about being charbroiled!). Be in prayer with God today about how you can have it His normal way. God wants to restore you to full obedience so He can give you the full measure of His blessings.

In His love and service,

Jeff Myers
A servant of Jesus Christ
