Captive Thoughts

Does Satan have any strongholds in your mind today? Does he have strongholds of negative, critical, self-emaciating thinking that limit the work of the Holy Spirit in your life? Do you have any thoughts or thought patterns that need to be brought into obedience to Christ?

If anyone is brave enough to answer “No!”, allow me to rephrase the question. What if I put up a screen and projected all the thoughts in your mind from this previous week so that everyone could see them? Would you be embarrassed? Would you have any explaining to do? Would you have to leave town or need to contact an attorney?

Most of us do not have thought patterns that take each thought captive and conform it to Christ’s way of thinking. In fact, for many of us, it’s the other way around – we are captive to our thoughts, which are influenced by our flesh, our culture, and Satan. Because of this, we are prone to fall into sin.

Most of us have thought patterns that prevent us from reaching our full potential in life, thoughts that keep us from experiencing and enjoying any real and satisfying interpersonal relationships. Our sinful thoughts rob us of the joy, peace, and love God wants us to have in our life. Our continued sin often causes us to be harsh, critical, or cynical, quenching the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It can even make us susceptible to illness and pain.

The mind is a powerful and wondrous creation. It has the ability to think, reason, calculate, analyze, communicate, and comprehend a wide variety of topics and concepts. These are all special, unique functions God gave us when He created our minds and is part of being created in His image.

Unfortunately, these same mental powers that enable man to do incredible things such as building spacecraft that can reach the outer regions of our galaxy, harness the power of the atom, or create a computer chip capable of storing entire libraries of information, can also be used for incredible evil. This same mind can hate and destroy our fellow man, create and practice unimaginable perversions, be controlled by compulsive habits, or scheme and implement horrible plots of assassination or revenge.

The Bible commands us to take each thought captive and conform it to God’s will. We are to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5). Think back on your life. Aren’t there thoughts you wish you had taken captive so you could have prevented the destructive sin that followed?

What we think usually equates to what we become. Whoever or whatever controls your mind controls you. God wants us to think normal, Christ-like thoughts, not thoughts of evil and perversion. This is why He does not want us to view pornography, read, watch, or participate in sorcery and witchcraft, or watch violent entertainment. King David said, “I will set before my eyes no vile thing.” (Psalm 101:3). He knew what entered his mind through sight eventually influenced his thought life and later his actions (2 Samuel 11:1-5).

It is normal to take every thought captive and conform it to the mind of Christ. The evil thoughts we allow in and do not purge immediately will eventually play out on the public screen of our lives. What we think foreshadows who and what we become and our thoughts have a direct and powerful influence on how we live our lives.

If Satan has a stronghold on any of your thoughts, pray today for God to help you purge them from your mind. Let the gift of Christ’s blood and the power Holy Spirit cleanse your mind. Take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ. Your life, as well as your relationship with God, will be better for it.

In His love and service,
