When the Levee Breaks

June 1st starts the official beginning of hurricane season. Whereas the last few seasons have had fewer hurricanes than average and, even with Sandy, fewer massive storms, we know not what this year’s season will bring. Only God knows. We pray He will spare the world the damaging seasons He sent about a decade ago.

When Hurricane Katrina first hit the Gulf Coast in August of 2005, initially observers were thankful the eye of the hurricane did not pass directly over New Orleans, thus inflicting the maximum amount of damage. New Orleans, a city built largely below sea level, protects itself by means of levees, which prevent water entry. The city also pumps out water that manages to seep in. The great anticipated fear was that the full force of Katrina would breech these barriers and flood the city. Those worst fears were realized and the Gulf Coast is still recovering.

Even though New Orleans was spared being hit directly, little was spared in terms of devastation. The levees that protected the city for years were breached and the city was flooded beyond imagination. The earthen system of levees people had trusted to prevent a catastrophic flood failed, and few structures survived intact the onslaught of the waters. What man makes, God can destroy.

On a spiritual level, many people put up barriers or levees in order to keep out the Truth of God and Jesus Christ. Just as with the levee barriers in New Orleans, our spiritual barriers are subject to destruction and the results can be even more catastrophic. Jesus told us, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27).

As one who relied on spiritual levees for years to keep out the Living Water of Jesus Christ (John 4:10), I can attest to the great crash I experienced when the Truth of God broke through, allowing the Living Water of Jesus Christ to cleanse me. All the illusions, deceptions, and barriers I had used for years to block out the Truth vanished and exposed my state of spiritual bankruptcy. By God’s mercy and grace, He kept me alive long enough to realize the errors of my ways and to embrace Him along with my LORD and Savior Jesus Christ. Praise God that He broke the levees of my heart!

There are many alive today who continue to build and maintain spiritual levees inside. If we don’t help them break down the levees, they will suffer even worse consequences than we saw from Katrina, Sandy, or other hurricane. As long as we are alive, we can accept the Truth of God and His Son Jesus Christ who came to save us. Once we die, the levee breaks for good and the destruction is complete. If we do not accept Jesus as our Savior while we are alive we will be eternally separated from God (Romans 10:10).

The levee always breaks; it is a normal part of God’s plan for us. The question is whether the breach will happen while you are still alive or whether you will wait until it is too late. If the levee breaks while you are still alive, God has offered a way to escape permanent spiritual death. If you don’t let God break it now, He will break it after you die, and “it will fall with a great crash” (Matthew 7:27). The destruction will be complete.

The timing of when the levee breaks in your heart is the most important event in your life. It is normal for this to happen while you are living on Earth. Make sure you let God breech the walls of your heart while you are still alive so you can make the decision and commitment to live with Him for eternity. Otherwise, the flood of misery will never cease.
