Living It Up

Being a Christian in today’s world can be difficult. Temptation surrounds us at every turn. To magnify the problem, we have the transportation, communication, and economic resources to fulfill our physical, if not our sinful, desires more than ever. We have access 24/7 to any type of sin we could imagine. In our weakness, we ask ourselves, since “everybody is doing it”, why shouldn’t we partake of the fun? Society today is loath to censure or to impose severe penalties for misbehaving.

One of the things God gives us in His Holy Word is the reassurance that human nature has not changed over the years. Man has been a sinful creature ever since Adam’s fall. We are reminded of this reality over and over in the Bible. Peter was called to remind the followers of his day, saying “For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do – living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you.” (1 Peter 4:3-4).

Peter’s words are almost 2000 years old, yet they are obviously appropriate for the world today. Many today engage in the fulfillment of their Earthly desires, criticizing and mocking others who try to deny them of their sin. Even worse, we as a culture glorify the individual and heap abuse on those who would live less self-centered lives. To be a servant seems quaint and repugnant. They reckon time’s a wasting – with life so short, only a fool would deny himself pleasure and fun.

God tells us He does not change and His Word shows us we do not change. His will is for us to be Holy (Leviticus 11:44) so we may not perish, which is also His will (2 Peter 2:9). Therefore, we should continue to follow His ways no matter what the culture lobbies us to do. God is calling us through His Word to live up to His standards, not the standards of the world.

God also shows us how living up to His ways will cut against the grain of the culture around us. We will be looked upon with scorn. Abuse will be heaped upon us. We will be mocked for not living it up and “enjoying life” while we have the chance. Those who are perishing have no concept that their lifestyle is against the Word of God. Peter said it centuries ago (2 Peter 3:3), and a similar moral decline is happening in the world around us today.

God gave us all free choice. We can choose to live up to His standards or we can live according to the ways of the world. In His Holiness, God has called Christians to live to a higher standard and we must never forget how we, as Christians, are different. Our personal relationship with Jesus Christ sets us apart from the world and makes us a different being, born in the Spirit and washed in His blood, a concept very difficult for the world to understand. Jesus has forewarned us of the persecution we should expect (John 15:18-20), and He has overcome the world (John 16:33).

God called His people to be Holy, as He is (Leviticus 11:44). Because of the sacrifice of Christ, which takes away our sin, we are called to live a higher life. We are not to continue to sin just because His grace will always rise to cover our transgressions (Romans 3:5-8). Our lives are no longer our own, and we must die daily to our self (1 Corinthians 15:31). So live a normal, Godly life. Live it up to His standards. The world will notice the difference. Those around you may not understand it, but you will be set above. Praise His name, and live it up for Him.

In His love and service,

Jeff Myers

A servant of Jesus Christ
